-- folio blog about menu landscape photography by paul marsden folio blog about life on mars a lone yellowing blackbrush stands against the backdrop of island in the sky in canyonland's, it's rim set ablaze by the sunset. the rock formations of utah can be truly unearthly, standing at this rim overlook, surrounded by nothing but red dust and crimson cliffs, you could forgive yourself for thinking your off-world. nanven zen despite the title, this was a less than calm winter's morning at porth nanven in the cot valley. having visited the cove several times before, i had the mind to visit this part of the beach at sunrise. the results were surprisingly unexpected. the beaches' boulders, usually far more prominent, were concealed by sand and their arrangement reminded me of zen gardens. the dull skies, usually photographically 'boring' provided a flat-purple cast that seemed to add to the serenity, nanven zen dead horse point sunrise overlooking dead horse point overlook. the water of the colorado river was so still, an almost perfect reflection can be seen of the buttes burning fire red from the cresting sun. the 3 boulders on the cliff edge made for a perfect foreground, the low sun combined to it's position at this time of year side lit the buttes and the pinon tree nicely. marlboro point, canyonlands sunrise strikes the top of this butte and spire setting their sandstone ablaze with colour at this remote overlook in the canyonlands national park backcountry. a 3 am start and 11 mile round trip hike across the mesa to this remote rim overlook was well worth the morning light show. the partially shaded rocks on the canyon's rim retained an eerie blue quality despite the warmth of the morning sunrise spreading across the canyon landscape, making for great contrast. driftwood, vermillion cliffs i found the remains of this desiccated tree branch lying at the bottom of this wonderful narrow sandstone corridor, leading to a formation the coyote buttes wilderness area is now infamous for, the wave. the branch took on the form of an exotic form of driftwood, the rows of multi-coloured sandstone fins twisting and turning around each other like petrified water -- as if suspended in time. muted light evened out the tones and diffused any shadows. minutes earlier i’d been cursing the cloud cover from robbing me of any sunrise opportunities, but any strong directional light would have rendered this scene in too much shadow and contrast—which goes to prove, there’s no such thing as bad weather. ladyboot arch, alabama hills ladyboot arch after bumping into steven christenson at möbius arch one sunrise, steven and his companion eric, were kind enough to show me some of their favourite locations in the alabama hills. first up was this gem of an arch, known locally as ladyboot. a tortured, squat, somewhat ugly formation, which on its own wasn't that photogenic, especially as the late morning location meant we faced shooting into the sun. it had a certain charm though, and tucking low underneath the arch, i found these huge dough ball like boulders at the shaded base. covered in rich lichens they made for interesting foreground to shoot up at the arch, whilst a swirl like cloud formation formed above its peak burning bush, valley of fire sunrise renders this lone bone-white tumbleweed in stark contrast to a nameless burning crimson mountain chain in the aptly named, valley of fire. fangorn forest whilst out hiking in the hoh rainforest, i came across this densely entangled web of interlocking branches. more moss than tree, each surface was drenched in tails of thick clubmoss that seems to be reclaiming the forest. working my position to align all the branches created this impenetrable view, evoking the dense web of the rainforest undergrowth. the morning's rain and fog dampened the leaves bringing out the verdant green throughout this this ancient place. from a buick 6, bodie ghost town its tyres long since decayed, the chassis of this classic american car sits, rusting on its haunches whilst slowly being swallowed by the long dry desert grasses. the car hasn’t moved since roughy 1920 when the last occupants of bodie, now a remote ghost town in the sierra nevada mountains, left their worldly possessions and opted for greener pastures. fallen roof ruin, cedar mesa ice and rain have taken it's toll on this ancient anasazi granary. the alcove above the ruin has slowly been splintering and collapsing since its occupants abandoned cedar mesa. the weathering has created wonderful patterns in the rock above -- and giving this granary it's moniker; fallen roof ruin. light in this backcountry location is wonderful, sunlight bounces off the alcove floors, the incident rays on the roof create deep oranges and yellows that can be glimpsed fleetingly before the sun climbs above the canyon walls and bleaches the scene. the crack, subway eons of fast-flowing water have sawn their way through the hard kayenta bedrock layer here in the remote kolob terraces. within this deep groove, almost the entire the river channels its flow at high speed. the shade of the canyon gave the waters a blue hue, which sat in contrast to the yellow remains of cottonwood leaves shed for autumn. virgin cascades, subway the kolob terraces tower heavenward at over a thousand feet above you as you wade through left fork creek. the walls begin to progressively narrow and take a series of horseshoe-like bends, whose twists and turns bounce low morning light around the sandstone canyon walls. the reflected light here providing subtle colours and a perfect contrast to the cool blue hues of the creek waters which tumbled over this set of cascades. endor, hoh rainforest everywhere and everything in the washington's hoh rainforest is carpeted in some form of plant life, mainly moss. the soil, the trees, the forest canopy are drenched in plant-on-plant action. plants even live on other plants. this entangled group of branches caught my eye a strange set of lead in lines; trees are a subject i struggle with, being so chaotic and full of contrast, they are difficult compositionally to master. oneonta gorge narrows in many ways, oneonta gorge reminds me a lot of the slot canyons of the southwest. tight narrows, vaulted high cliffs, albeit with a lush moss drenched walls rather than bare sandstone. getting to the gorge was quite the adventure, scrabbling over a giant deadfall of trees, followed by a chest deep wade up river, which with the springtime snow melt was ice cold. it was too deep to continue, but i was determined to make a image, so found a small ‘shoreline’ on which to compose this shot. explosions in the sky a wonderful display of sunrise light across loch scavaig, to the isle of soay. it was raining all morning whilst i was decamped on the shore of the loch. whilst making for frustrating shooting, the rain soaked the rocks, adding a lovely texture and contrast to the stains and lichen which complimented the dark moody blues in the clounds. the maw a narrow tongue of rock juts out into the atlantic along the acadian coastline in maine. dramatic drop offs flank either side leading to inaccessible coves where the surf booms. this overlook is not officially on the national park maps, and took some finding, for good reason, the 'ledge' itself is very narrow - a tripod's stance is all that separates you from the void. sligachan falls, isle of skye there were prefect skies and flow at the sligahan falls, i felt very lucky indeed given how capricious and changeable the weather on the isle of skye can be. i returned to these waterfalls a few days later after a torrent of rain had hit the island only to find the falls completely inundated and all trace of the falls lost to the water's flow. rubha hunish the deep peaty pools created inky black mirrors on a remote peninsula on the isle of skye. the setting sun lit the imposing fortress like basalt cliffs in the distance, and seemed to set the dead grass ablaze, which c
